Dental Implants in Downtown Edmonton

Missing and damaged teeth are a common problem for many people. If you are missing your natural teeth you may find that there are other things you miss too. You may miss your natural smile or not being able to eat the food you desire. Perhaps your remaining teeth are shifting, or you suffer from muscle strain and headaches. It doesn’t have to be this way. With dental implants and prosthetic solutions from dental implants, most people can get new teeth that look, feel and function like the real thing.

NEW TEETH THAT ARE JUST LIKE THE REAL THING!

If one or more of your teeth are missing, there are a number of ways to replace them. An alternative to a bridges, partial dentures or complete dentures may be dental implants from our downtown Edmonton dental clinic. Implants are used to replace missing teeth and support artificial replacements. They are comfortable and look like natural teeth. Dental implants are state-of-the art tooth replacements for natural teeth missing due to age, accident, or disease. Pain and disease free, they are often stronger than real teeth and offer enormous advantages over even the best dentures and bridges which may compromise adjacent teeth.

Dental Implants involve a two-step procedure:

  1. The first step is the placement of the titanium implant. The implant will remain covered underneath the gum for approximately 3-6 months. During this time, the implant will fuse to the bone. Temporary crowns are optional during this bone healing period.
  2. The final step is the placement of your new tooth by Dr. Magathan. With techniques that ensure optimal size, shape, colour and fit, this replacement tooth blends with your remaining natural teeth.
Dental Implant Facts

There are risks and processes to placement of dental implants, and our Edmonton dentist will review these risks in great detail.

Because dental implants require one or more surgical procedures, you must have a thorough evaluation to prepare for the process, including a:

  • Comprehensive dental exam: You may have dental X-rays taken and models made of your teeth and mouth.
  • Treatment plan: Tailored to your situation, this plan takes into account factors such as how many teeth you need to have replaced and the condition of your jawbone. The planning process may involve a few visits depending on the complexity.

Dental implants are embedded firmly into the jaw, providing chewing support as secure as natural teeth, thus greatly increasing the enjoyment associated with food and dining.

Dental implants have a long history of success. Recent studies show implants remain viable and trouble free, literally, for decades.

Dental implants improve facial contouring and appearance, comfort, speech, and self- confidence.

Dental implants do not compromise the structure or health of adjacent natural teeth. Please note that dental implants require a series of surgical procedures. Recipients must be in good health to comfortably undergo the implant process.

Additional Dental Implant Information
What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal or Zirconia. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Who can get dental implants?

If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, dental implants might be right for you. If your jawbone has shrunk or if it has not developed normally, you may be able to have a bone graft to build up the bone. A bone graft is a way of adding new bone to your jawbone. Dr Magathan and her team tell you if bone grafting can be done.

How dental implants are done by the Team at Magathan Dental Centre
  • We will carefully examine your mouth and take x-rays of your head, jaw and teeth to find out if dental implants are right for you.
  • During the first stage of surgery, the Doctor will put a dental implant into your jawbone beneath the gum tissue. The gum tissue is then stitched back into place. Sometimes this is not necessary. As the tissue heals, the implant will bond with the bone and attach to the gum. It can take several months to heal.
  • During the second stage of surgery and once the tissue is healed, Dr. Magathan will attach an abutment to the implant. An abutment is a post that connects the replacement tooth to the implant. In some cases, the first and second stage of implant surgery may be done in one single stage.
  • An artificial replacement tooth is made and Dr. Magathan attaches it to the abutment. It may take several appointments to properly fit the replacement tooth to the abutment.
  • When replacing several teeth or all of your teeth, a fixed bridge is anchored to your dental implants. A bridge is a dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by spanning an area that has no teeth. The bridge is held firmly in place by dental implants on each side of the missing tooth or teeth.
Caring for my dental implant(s)

Because dental implants are placed in the jawbone, artificial replacement teeth attached to implants look and act much like natural teeth. Like natural teeth, implants need to be kept clean using a toothbrush and floss. Your dentist will show you the proper cleaning procedure for implants. Regular dental checkups are important so your dentist can make sure that your bite is right and that your implants are not loose.
